Packed with striking photographs, this impressive retrospective provides all the details car aficionados want and expect from Car and Driver, and continues the magazine’s tradition of putting the reader in the driver’s seat. From its beginnings as Sports Car Illustrated, to its evolution in the muscle car era of the ’60s, to its emergence as the technical authority on new vehicles, Car and Driver has featured great automotive journalists, including Brock Yates, Don Sherman, and author P.J. O’Rourke. More than a compilation of past articles and photographs, Fifty Years with Car and Driver tells the story of the American automobile, spotlighting people who helped shape some of the world’s hottest cars. Appealing to not just to the magazine’s fans but also to anyone interested in the history of American cars, this look back combines classic articles, commentary by former staffers, vintage and modern photos of the hottest and most important cars reviewed, as well as stories from behind the scenes—with all the attitude, expertise, and visual excitement fans have come to count on. His other books include Hummer and the forthcoming Bobcat.
Author Bio
Marty Padgett spent the ’70s toddling, the ’80s regretting his wardrobe, and the ’90s learning about the auto industry, as an enthusiast and as a journalist. Marty earned his Bachelor of Arts (cum laude, with special honors in interwar European history) from Duke University in 1991, then joined the staff of Car and Driver magazine as the editor of UpFront, the news and information corner of the million-selling monthly. Today, in addition to serving as executive editor of The Car Connection, he writes for Stuff magazine and Import Tuner. Marty lives in Atlanta’s Morningside village, when he’s not loitering on the Gulf coast. He still gets an irregular heartbeat from Duke basketball.
