The Los Angeles Times published an article (Future of Reading) that profiled a few authors who are successfully publishing their work themselves.

While this could be a better option for many authors, it all comes down to an author’s ability to produce something worth reading and their ability to connect with readers to generate sales. Many authors need guides through the writing, packaging and marketing of their book.

While I am almost sick of eBook news, I suppose we must discuss to move forward and adapt. Mashable.com recently published “5 E-Book Trends That Will Change the Future of Publishing” and I am most interested in the first and last trends.

Yes, enhanced eBooks will become key but it will be challenging to create engaging enhanced eBooks with quality content. Also, how do we decide if it is indeed an eBook or an Application?

Authors will need a publisher with resources or talented freelancers to edit, create, and market their work. Online and in eBook marketplaces there will be even more competition and struggle to stand out and generate sales.

In 2011, we are launching multiple products to help an author or publisher create enhanced eBooks with engaging content, social functionality and ways to publicize individual books and authors online. Stay tuned for an exciting year…
